Bam! Bam! Bam!

I awakened, started, with Jasmine’s leg wrapped around my neck. I glanced at my watch. It read 8:10 a.m. Damn I had overslept.

Bam! Bam! Bam!

Someone was banging on the front door. I staggered down the hall and peeped out the curtain. It was Mr. Johnson, our landlord. “Shit!” I cursed. Backing up from the door, I bumped into something. I spun around startled, it was Vanessa. “Landlord,” I whispered, then placed my finger over my lips.” “Shhh.”

Barefooted, we padded down the hall over wooden, barren floors and knocked on mama’s door. Frank always slept late. I needed to get the rent money mama had stashed in the closet. Vanessa pulled out her razor, I frowned and made a face at her. “Put that away!” She frowned back, “Nope.”

I knocked at the door. No answer. Vanessa banged on it with her fist.

No answer.

Vanessa and I exchanged glances, she pushed in front of me, opening the door. “Ughh!” The stench of crack smoke and malodorous funk permeated the room. Beer cans, ashtrays and cigarette buts littered the floor as we stepped over clothes. A crack pipe made from an antenna sat on top of the nightstand next to the bed. I rushed over to the closet with my heart racing. As soon as I looked inside, I knew the money was gone, but still fumbled around on the top shelf with my hands.

The money was gone, and so was Frank, “Shit!” “I swear to God, I’ma kill that nigga!” Vanessa said. What am I going to do now? I wondered.

“There was another knock at the door just as Jasmine walked into the room. I walked past her to look outside the window. To my surprise, it was Jamal. Behind him I saw the landlord walk off, get into the truck and drive off. I hesitated before I opened the door. I looked like shit. My hair wasn’t combed, I hadn’t even washed my face and had on the same clothed from yesterday.

Reluctantly, I smoothed my hair back, pulled my panties out my ass and opened the door. I had to do a double take. There was big ass sign taped to the door. It read: Eviction Notice. Jamal snatched it down, balled it up and threw it. I had never been so embarrassed in my entire life. “I hit dude off with a coupla bills, namean? Y’all good.” He blushed boyishly.

I didn’t know whether to hug him of thank him, so I did both. “Thank you Jamal.” I squeezed his neck. Say what you want about a thug, but Jamal showed a sista love. “You still want to go see yo mama?”

“Yess!” voices intoned in chorus. I looked behind me, and jasmine and Vanessa were standing there all smiles. That day, I told Jamal about Frank stealing the rent money and about him trying me for sex. Jamal was pissed to say the least.

As usual, Bond Secure Hospital was a madhouse. That day, people were everywhere, the sick, the dying, folks bleeding.
